November 2009 Noises in hydraulic equipment
16 November 2009

We've all been there: you've got an important project going on with a major client and you hear something that's not quite right with your hydraulic equipment. It could be the hydraulic pump, the motor, the valve or the cylinder, either way it doesn't sound good and it'll have to be fixed.

This kind of noise in your hydraulic system can be caused by a number of factors. The energy being used is produced by a combination of pressure drop and turbulent flow and can often be amplified by other components in the hydraulic structure. The choice of certain features like line sizes and structural members can be affected by costs, and using parts that are too small for example can result in unwanted and off-putting noise.

Here are a few quick things to consider when dealing with noise in your hydraulic parts:

- Cutting down lines speeds and pressure drops should be standard procedure, but pay even more attention to this when you're contending with unpleasant noise

- If you're utilising components that are known to produce noise and vibrations, do you best to isolate them from the supporting structure

- The design and implementation of the tank, supporting structure and so on are crucial to reducing noise, so give particular attention to this part of the process
