November 2009 Failure of hydraulic hoses and how to stop it
2 November 2009

A hydraulic hose won't last forever, but there are measures you can take to lengthen the lifespan. As with a lot of hydraulic components, the hose doesn't often receive a lot of attention or maintenance until it actually fails. Without even going into the cost of replacing the hydraulic hose, there are obvious additional costs in this scenario; the money lost due to the downtime of your staff and machinery for example.

So how do failures come about? Well, keep an eye on the following:

1) Keep external damage to a minimum by making sure all clamps are secure
2) Research shows that the most frequent cause of problems with hydraulic hose come from external damage - hoses rubbing against other hoses and so on
3) If the hose is regularly exposed to extreme conditions of cold or heat, this will affect how long it lasts
4) Fluctuations in pressure on a regular basis will also affect the lifespan of your hydraulic hose
